Recently, Kia unveiled its latest strides in this electrifying journey during its 2025 EV Day event in Spain, highlighting its commitment to affordable and innovative electric mobility. Among the exciting announcements, the new EV4 sedan and hatchback, alongside the urban-focused EV2 SUV concept, signal Kia’s drive to cement its position in the evolving EV market.

At the forefront of Kia’s announcements is the EV4, which represents a significant step forward for those seeking an affordable electric vehicle. First introduced as a concept in 2023, the EV4 has now transitioned into a tangible product that boasts a variety of options tailored to meet consumer preferences. With its two distinct versions—a traditional four-door sedan and a sportier five-door hatchback aimed predominantly at the European market—Kia is clearly targeting diverse demographics.

However, while the EV4 promises accolades for usability and style, it is not designed to be a performance powerhouse. The vehicle will feature a single-motor front-wheel drive system, generating 150 kW of power and achieving 0-62 mph in just 7.4 seconds. This modest performance reflects a strategic choice by Kia to prioritize an appealing price point and efficiency over cutting-edge speed. Additionally, the sedan will utilize what Kia calls a 400-volt version of its Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which, although slightly slower to charge than the 800-volt version utilized in models like the EV6, still promises a respectable charging time of 31 minutes from 10 to 80 percent.

Battery range is undoubtedly one of the most critical factors influencing customer decisions on electric vehicles. Kia has made bold claims regarding the EV4’s capabilities, estimating it can cover an impressive 630 kilometers (approximately 391 miles) on a single charge with the larger 81.4 kWh battery option. A smaller 58.3 kWh battery will still deliver a commendable range of 430 kilometers (around 267 miles). Still, one must consider that these figures align with Europe’s more forgiving WLTP standards, leaving some potential customers to ponder how real-world performance might differ.

Besides range, the EV4 is packed with technological advancements, including a staggering 30-inch widescreen display that merges the instrument cluster and infotainment system into a single, cohesive interface. Running Kia’s innovative “connected car Navigation Cockpit” software, users will benefit from cutting-edge features such as in-car entertainment ranging from streaming services like YouTube and Netflix to games, all accessible through a centralized app store. In addition to tech-savvy innovations, Kia has included practical functionalities such as an AI voice assistant and vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities to ensure the vehicle meets lifestyle needs beyond transportation.

In a bid to entice budget-conscious consumers, Kia introduced the EV2 concept, hailed as its “smallest EV yet.” Anticipated to be even more affordable than the EV4, the EV2 is designed with practicality in mind, featuring configurable seating arrangements to maximize space and functionality. Whether for lounging or extra cargo room, this versatility aims to address the diverse needs of urban drivers.

The addition of removable speakers for tailgating adds an intriguing layer of convenience and enjoyment, catering to a social driving experience that is becoming increasingly sought after among younger generations. With the EV2 set to launch in 2026, its integration into Kia’s electric lineup highlights the company’s dedication to providing a range of options for all types of drivers.

Kia’s ambitious plans don’t end with the introduction of the EV4 and EV2. The EV4 sedan is already slated for production in Korea, with an initial release expected in March, followed by the hatchback, which will be manufactured in Slovakia and introduced to the European market later in 2024. Pricing for the EV4 starts at around 37,000 euros (roughly $38,500), making it a competitive option for consumers looking for mass-market electric vehicles in North America, especially as rival brands, such as Volkswagen, recalibrate their EV strategies.

Kia’s foray into the electric vehicle segment through the launch of the EV4 and EV2 marks a pivotal moment for the brand.
